The Best Typewriter Fonts for Authentic Nostalgia

If you’re a writer or designer who is old enough to remember what it was like to use a typewriter, just seeing these classic typewriter fonts will surely bring back memories!
The distinct ticks of your fingers firmly pressing the keys and each letter hammer striking the paper as you typed. That distinctive ‘ding’ that told you when you’d reached the end of a line and the sound of the carriage quickly sliding back to start the next line of type.
Typewriters were innovative technology in their day. These mighty machines were the tools of the trade of countless writers, poets, playwrights, and scriptwriters, so it’s no surprise that they hold nostalgia in the hearts of so many people. And that’s the kind of nostalgia that you can’t buy.
If you’re looking to add time-honored charm, character, or a classic vibe to a design you’re working on, consider using the best typewriter fonts.
The Best Typewriter Fonts

They have a very specific look that’s hard to replicate with other fonts. We’ve pulled together this roundup of more than 25 of our favorites for you to use in your creative designs.
And don’t worry — unlike a real typewriter, if you make a mistake while typing with one of these fonts, you won’t have to start completely over!

Scripter Serif
Many typewriter fonts, by design, are distressed to give them a more vintage look. Scripter, on the other hand, is very crisp and clean. If you’re simply looking for the characteristics and charm of a typewriter typeface without all the grunge, look no further. Scripter includes upper and lowercase letters, numbers, punctuation. Web font available.
Standard Typewriter
Simple, timeless, classic…this authentic typewriter font is a perfect choice for those designs where you want to mimic the type of an old-fashioned typewriter. It’s a good choice for business cards, flyers, social media, and more. Standard Typewriter comes with uppercase, lowercase, numbers, punctuation, and multilingual support.
Postmark
Postmark is not your traditional typewriter-style font with serif lettering. Rather, it’s more of a vintage sans-serif. It’s well-suited for logo designs, signage, headlines, vintage posters, and event graphics. The zip file comes with two weights in regular and rough versions, upper and lowercase letters, ligatures, stylistic alternates, numbers, and punctuation.
Merchant Ledger
If Merchant Ledger looks authentic to you, that’s because it was developed using real hammer keys from a vintage typewriter! The slightly misaligned characters and baselines and rough edges give this font the honesty and authenticity that will spill over into your designs. Includes two weights in a regular version and distressed version, uppercase, lowercase, numbers, punctuation, and a web font.
Moments
Rough around the edges, charming, full of character, Moments has the quintessential typewriter aesthetic. It’s an excellent option for the modern minimalist packaging design that’s so trendy right now. Also an ideal choice for business cards, book covers, movie posters, and much more. Font package includes capital letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and punctuation. Web font available.
Old Brighton Typewriter
Here’s a more authentic type created using a dusty old vintage Brighton Typewriter. This one truly has a rustic, handcrafted vibe. It would be a fantastic option for modern farmhouse-style quotes, whiskey labels, branding, and craft projects. The zip file includes uppercase characters, lowercase characters, numbers, punctuation, and limited multilingual support.
Bygonest
Bygonest is a slab serif design with a vintage typewriter aesthetic. If your creative design calls for a display type with an honest, authentic, nostalgic feeling, this could be the choice for you! It’s ideal for replicating old newspapers since it comes with three weights to create both large headlines and small body copy. The font package includes three weights in two styles, clean and rustic, capital letters, lowercase letters, numbers, punctuation, multilingual support, and a web font.
Lumios Typewriter
Lumios, with its many stylistic alternate characters and multiple font styles, has the ability to truly look like it was typed on an actual typewriter. For this reason, it’s one of my favorite fun typewriter fonts on this list. It’s a great choice for any contemporary design, from packaging to websites. Includes four styles — new, used, old, and textured tape, upper and lowercase letters, numbers, punctuation, stylistic alternates, and multilingual support.
Silk Remington Pro
Talk about bang for your buck! Silk Remington Pro comes with fourteen variations from thin and clean to bold and rough and every variation between. There’s even an outlined version, a drop-shadowed version, and a “someone really should’ve kept a dust cover on their typewriter” version. You’ll definitely find a style here that will work with your artistic design project. The file includes 14 styles, uppers, lowers, numbers, punctuation, and multilingual support.
Amateur Typewriter
Type designers must find an actual typewriter so much fun to play with! Here’s another classic design that was sampled from a vintage mechanical typewriter. What makes Amateur Typewriter stand out is that it comes with four styles, including underline (which you’re familiar with), strikethrough, and crossed. For those of you who haven’t had the pleasure of using a typewriter — that’s how we used to cover up mistakes before delete was invented! Zip includes four styles in regular and italic, uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, punctuation, and multilingual support.
Farmland
Farmland feels more hand-drawn and rustic than many of the typical typewriter fonts on our list. It’s more of a modern farmhouse style that’s inspired by typewriter font. It’s a perfect choice for branding, quotes, wall art, signs, business cards, logos, and anything that calls for the modern farmhouse look that is so extremely popular these days. The font includes uppercase, lowercase, numbers, punctuation, and multilingual support.
Typrighter
Stop scrolling and check this out! Typrighter is not your typical typewriter font. Yes, it’s got all the charming details that make your copy look like it was typed on a 90-year old typewriter, like slight variations in boldness and uneven lettering. But that’s not what makes it so unique. Typrighter uses Applied Contextual Substitutions to automatically replace letters from seven different variations of the typeface. With this feature, your copy always looks completely different, authentic, and original. Comes with over 900 glyphs — uppers, lowers, numbers, and punctuation.
Fletcher Typewriter
Fletcher isn’t just a font package — it’s a mini design kit built around the vintage typewriter font aesthetic. It comes with a great slab serif bold typewriter font in regular or jumpy (uneven lettering) styles and also includes tons of extra vintage elements you can use for your design inspiration. The zip includes 2 styles in 3 weights, uppercase, lowercase, numbers, punctuation, multilingual support, ligatures, 10 vintage paper scans, 15 stamps, and 6 stains and splatters.
Abegnale Typeface
Similar in appearance to the typewriter, Abegnale is based on the old-fashioned letterpress machines that were used for printing newspapers, books, and other mass-printed goods. It’s a perfect choice for adding a feeling of authenticity, honesty, maturity, and refined elegance to your corporate designs. If you’re working on a design project for a company that’s been around for a long time, look for fonts like this one to establish that time-honored feeling. Comes with upper and lowercase letters, numbers, and punctuation.
Not My Type
Here’s another font that, if you enable Contextual Alternatives in your design program, will automatically change the letters as you type to give it the appearance of being random — as if typed from an actual typewriter. This font comes with three variations of each letter. This was created from an antique, grungy typewriter which adds a lot of character to body texts. This authenticity is almost impossible to replicate without the real thing! Zip includes upper and lowercase letters, numbers, and punctuation.
Typewriter Font
Simple, to the point, and traditional. If you’re looking for a no-frills typewriter font for package design, invitations, business cards, home decor, branding, and more, this typeface will get the job done. Font package includes uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and basic punctuation.
Corpus Typewriter
For your consideration, Corpus Typewriter is another authentic typewriter font, sampled from a real vintage machine. It includes 3 variations of each character so you can truly get an authentic look. You also get 18 free graphics that were made with a genuine redaction marker. So, if you’re creating mock classified documents or FBI case files — this is the set for you! Includes three variations of each: uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, punctuation, multilingual support, and 18 high-res PNG redaction graphics.
Tex Writer
Tex Writer has the vintage, classic vibe you get from a typewriter typeface, but combined with the modern, casual feel of a handwritten font. It’s a good choice for advertising for brands that want to be taken seriously but still show they can be fun. Zip includes 7 weights in regular and italic, uppercase, lowercase, numbers, punctuation, and multilingual support.
Perfect Thoughts
This is another one of my favorite fonts on this roundup because it’s got a playful imperfection that lets you add personal style to your projects. The uneven baseline, realistic stamp marks, and roughness (that you adjust by using either the uppercase or lowercase version, make it a fun font to play with. Includes three variations — regular, straight, and stamp, all caps letters, numbers, and punctuation.
Unexpected Typewriter Font
This hand-drawn typewriter font is based on an old Underwood typewriter. It focuses heavily on the thick lines, smudged edges, and imperfections that vintage typewriter lettering is known for. It would be a great choice for social media, home decor designs, book covers, or t-shirt designs. Comes with 4 variations — dirty, faded, jumpy, and rusted, uppercase, lowercase, numbers, punctuation, and multilingual support.
Detective
Detective is a classic typewriter font based on the machine, but only in looks — this one was 100% completely hand-drawn. It combines the charm of the typewriter font aesthetic with the playfulness and clean lines of a modern, hand-drawn typeface. Zip file includes uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and punctuation.
Catalina Typewriter
Here’s another hand-drawn typewriter font, but this one is truly intended to have an organic, charming, hand-written menu board kind of vibe. Use it for designs that call for a quirky, handmade flair. Great for crafts, scrapbooking, bakeries, menus, and more. Font family includes three weights in regular and italic, upper and lowercase letters, contextual alternatives, numbers, and punctuation. Web font available.
AMTW
Bold, legible, and classic, AMTW is inspired by the “American old typewriter” and if you’re in the market for a typewriter font, it certainly gets the job done. It comes in three styles — regular (which is crisp and clean), rough (with distorted edges), and rough-rough (with distortion around the edges and through the letters). Because it’s so bold, this font would be best used as a large display type for posters, website headers, social media graphics, and quotes. Zip file includes three styles with uppers, lowers, numbers, and punctuation.
Free Typewriter Fonts
That wraps up our favorite premium fonts, but our roundup of typewriter fonts wouldn’t be complete if we didn’t include these great free fonts, too! We always recommend checking the license with any free font, especially if you’re working on a project for a client, as some of them are only free for personal use.
1942 Report
This grunge typewriter serif font feels like it was pulled straight from classified government papers. I love the double imprint detail they used with some of the letters, but it would be best used in small doses.
Courier Prime
Courier is the quintessential digital typewriter font, originally created for IBM and it’s safe to assume Courier Prime is based on it since they look almost identical.
Traveling Typewriter
Here’s a font based on an old Danish typewriter made in western Germany. The font designer gave it a flat baseline, but the variation in letter height and weight gives it an authentic feel.
CarbonType
CarbonType was scanned directly from an old Samsonite typewriter. If you need authenticity, you’ll find it here. The designer said there was no number one on the machine so they had to use a lowercase L instead.
Kingthings Trypewriter
Here’s another one, made directly from a 90-year-old machine. I love that they’re given new life through fonts. The double imprints here are a nice touch and this one has a surprising amount of multilingual support.
Final Thoughts About Typewriter Fonts
So there you have it. Typewriter fonts evoke feelings of nostalgia in many people, as they remember the sound and feel of typewriters from days long gone. They have a unique style that can be used to give designs a classic or vintage look, which can be hard to replicate with other fonts.
Speaking of other fonts, typewriter fonts pair well with light, thin, modern sans-serifs or marker-style fonts that look like handwriting.
In this roundup, we collected more than 25 of the best typewriter fonts for you to use in your next design project. So, if you’re looking to add some old-school charm to your work — whether it’s a package design, a logo, or a website — consider using one of these typewriter fonts.
